Microsoft has informed the public that unauthorized users of the New Xbox Experience will face a ban from Xbox Live until the official release on November 19th. The New Xbox Experience is Microsoft’s complete renovation of the Xbox 360 interface. New features will include a more streamlined and informative marketplace as well as avatars! Private beta testing has started for some lucky xbox users but Microsoft has warned that usage of NXE on other unauthorized machines will mean the inability to sign into xbox live. This could mean that people who have NXE before they are supposed to will be unable to play over Live until November 19th! Don’t people, its not worth it…

Golden Axe: Beast Rider Review

Golden Axe Review

Golden Axe: Beast Riders’ attempt to revive a classic has failed pretty harshly. The game that was supposed to take players for a ride back into the days of Sega Genesis. However, the only ride it takes players on is an agonizing ride through a buggy world with serious control issues. Aside from the lack of music, reviewers have generally written about the strange control scheme and overall difficulty of gameplay. There was one reviewer (Play Magazine) which gave the game a 9/10 rating. Play also attacked the other reviewers by claiming that there was no way the online review sites had enough time to play through the game and give it a fair review. In the end, the only thing this game rides on is the fame of the Golden Axe franchise.

Bioshock 2

Posted by Davey Raine | Posted in Xbox 360 Preview | Posted on 24-10-2008

Bioshock was one of the biggest hits of 2007. In a year that saw the release of such great titles as Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4, this is no easy feat. Bioshock 2 has been announced, the trailer was first shown on the PS3 version of Bioshock. The new game, titled Sea of Dreams, is expected to be a prequel and a sequel at the same time. It is not being developed by 2K Boston and will instead be developed by 2K Marin. This is primarily because 2K Boston wants to develop something radically different. As if one sequel wasn’t enough, a second sequel has also been announced and is slated for release at roughly the same time as the Bioshock movie.

Fable 2 Review

Fable 2 Fable 2

I just got my hands on Fable 2 last night and much to my dismay, I ended up not finishing my homework because I was having so much fun in Albion. I expected a mildly entertaining game judging from the fact that many reviewers gave it a score in the mid 8’s. I strongly disagree with the reviews and believe whole-heartedly that this should definitely be a 9 or higher. The amount of detail put into the environment is amazing. Artistic direction is stunning and really captures the feel of a great story. Combat is a fun mixture of shooting, melee, and magic. Its nice to have a game that gives players the viable option of combining all 3 so no single mixture gets repetitive. The dog is a remarkable companion and you will soon feel yourself getting attached to it. Above all else, the amount of things to do in Albion is staggering. You can buy a house, raise a family, get a job and customize yourself all while still adventuring. My only complaint is that the money system was not well thought out as it is far too easy to make money in Albion. Other than that, it has been everything I wished Oblivion was. This game comes strongly recommended.

Xbox 360 continues to beat out the PS3 in sales

Posted by Jake Shaible | Posted in Xbox 360 news | Posted on 17-10-2008

Five weeks. It has been five weeks since the last time the Sony Playstation 3 sold more than the Microsoft Xbox 360. For the first time ever, the Xbox 360 beat out the Playstation 3 for the entire month of September in Japan. And that trend seems to continue. For the week ending on October 12, date coming from Media Create Co., have shown that the Xbox 360 has once again beat out the Playstation 3. For week of October 6 to October 12, the Xbox 360 sold 7,763 units compared to the PS3’s 5,734. Xbox’s recent success can be attributed to the recent price cut of the Xbox 360. Although the Xbox 360 is doing well against the Playstation 3, both fail in comparison in sales to the Nintendo Wii, which continues to sell strong worldwide.

Portal Coming to Xbox Live

Posted by Davey Raine | Posted in New 360 Games | Posted on 16-10-2008

Portal
Portal was an absolutely revolutionary game. The concept was so simple and yet provided such dynamic game play. The player assumes an unidentified test subject who is put through a series of tests by a mysterious voice over the intercom. The promise of a cake at the end of the challenge is the primary motivating force. The Gameplay revolves around the use of a portal gun which can project 2 way portals onto the surfaces of walls. Gravity is conserved when traveling through the portals so the players will must manipulate that to get through the many obstacles. It is a puzzle game in the truest sense of the word. Valve has announced that the Portal experience will be coming to Xbox Live on October 22nd 2008. The new version exclusive to XBL will feature the same original game and 14 new maps exclusive to the Xbox system.

Xbox 360

The Christmas Season is here and 2008 promises to be an exciting year for gaming! As gamers, we spend our entire year waiting for this chance to finally try the big titles. The games that developers have hyped for over 2 years are finally being released weekly within the span of about 2 short months. It is totaly bliss for gamers and a total drain on our wallets. With each game costing about 60 dollars, and the average gamer between highschool and his mid 20’s, we’re not the most financially blessed people. For all those new to the gaming scene, I’ve compiled a list of the top 10 videogames to watch in 2008. The following games are Xbox games so don’t complain if you don’t see Resistance on it.

  • 5- Mirror’s Edge
  • 4- Dead Space
  • 3- Prince of Persia
  • 2- Fable II
  • 1- Gears of War 2

Now this is just a list of anticipated games based on personal preference. But with over 10 years of gaming experience, I doubt anyone can have anything bad to say about the following titles. Go ahead, I dare you…

7 More Xbox Tricks

Posted by Davey Raine | Posted in Xbox 360 news | Posted on 09-10-2008

Xbox News

We all want to get the most out of our Xbox 360. After all, the system itself is far from perfect and we gamers are usually not exactly rich enough to go out every single night. Here are a few more tips to make passing time on the Xbox a little better. Thanks to techradar.com for providing them!

1. System updates by disc

Not got your console online yet, or having trouble downloading the latest dashboard update? Try downloading it from a web-connected PC or Mac instead and burning it to a CD. Grab the latest (well, latest-ish – hopefully Microsoft will update the page soon) update from the XBox 360 System Updates page, burn it to disc, then pop that disc into the 360 and turn it on. You’ll be prompted automatically as to whether you want to run the update.

2. The towel trick

Bit of a controversial one this, at least as long as you count “possibly burning your house down” as controversial. What it is is a short-term fix for the infamous red rings of death, the mournful LEDs that announce your 360 is deaded. There are various theories about why it works, but the important thing is that, for some people, it does. The way to do it is to wrap the console in a towel or two – ensuring all sides of it are covered – then turn it on and leave it running for 10 minutes or so. Then turn it off, remove the towels, turn it on again and pray. If it’s worked, it’ll only stay alive for a few hours, but doing this a couple of times may be enough to get you through those long, lonely days while you wait for Microsoft to collect and replace your dead Xbox. Again though, it’s dangerous – it could damage the console further, and could cause enough heat to set stuff on fire.

3. Clear the cache

Is your 360 dawdling along like a gin-addled pensioner? It’s possible its hard drive is full up with junk files from old games and downloads – a spring clean could work wonders. There’s a hidden function to clear out the cache, though be warned it’ll delete any game patches too, so you’ll probably have to redownload a few. Head to the System blade, select memory, HD, then press Y. Next, hit X, X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X and X. You should get a message about maintenance. Don’t expect miracles, but if a game’s been slowing down mysteriously lately, this could cure it, plus free up some extra space on your HD.

4. Makeshift web-browsing

Microsoft’s continued refusal to add a web browser to the 360 is infuriating, but there are a few ways to stare at the internet with your console if you’ve also got a PC in the house and on the same network, and running either Windows XP Media Center or Vista Home Premium/Ultimate. There are several ways to do it, but perhaps the easiest is the MCE Browser plug-in. It’s somewhat limited, but set it up on your Media Center PC then configure your 360 as a Media Extender and you can access your favourite web pages from it.

5. Stream Netflix movies

One for US 360 owners only, this. Again thanks to Windows Media Center and a free third-party plug-in called vmcNetflix you can save yourself from picking up an expensive set-top box to stream downloaded Netflix movies, as well as being able to manage your queue and set up new downloads from your PC. Install it, configure your 360 as a Media Center Extender and you’re away.

6. Quieten the damn thing down

The 360’s heat issues are well known, but they don’t mean the box has to quite as noisy as it is. That’s down to Microsoft using the cheapest fans it can get its hands on, which make an awful racket and are quite a distraction when you’re watching a movie. If you’re prepared to neuter your warranty, you can replace them with near-silent third-party jobs, such as the Talismoon WhisperFan. Go to real extremes with a complete replacement case, the Lian Li XB-01. Unfortunately, neither of these will silence the roar of the DVD drive, but once the upcoming dashboard update introduces installing games to the console’s hard drive, that’ll be less of a problem.

7. Insert special characters in your gamer profile

Oh, boring, boring text. Why can’t we make our Gamercards a bit flashier? Fortunately, there is a way, but unfortunately it involves screwing around with Far Eastern languages. It’s a bit of a complex process to explain in words alone, a video out there made by a helpful soul will guide you through the entire process.

Dead Space Game

Posted by Davey Raine | Posted in Xbox 360 Preview | Posted on 03-10-2008

Dead Space Dead Space 2

Besides Resident Evil and Silent Hill, the survival horror genre really doesn’t have many video games. Dead Space is a new game by Electronic Arts which seeks to breathe new life (despite the name) into the series. So far, there’s already been a review on it and at 91% it is very promising.

The Dead Space game’s story follows that of engineer Isaac Clark, whose ship has responded to a distress beacon sent out by the Ishimura, a giant planet cracking ship which …cracks planets… to mine the resulting ore. The ship’s crew is transformed by a hideous race of aliens that feed on necrotic flesh. While the story is pretty “Event Horizon”, reviewers have praised the presentation which is terrifying and could teach industry veteran games like Resident Evil a thing or two.

The game will release with a special offer by EA. Anyone who logs into the game’s online stores within two weeks after launch will receive a special suit which can be used in game. The suit will be better than Dead Space’s default suit and will be generally more powerful.
