Portal was an absolutely revolutionary game. The concept was so simple and yet provided such dynamic game play. The player assumes an unidentified test subject who is put through a series of tests by a mysterious voice over the intercom. The promise of a cake at the end of the challenge is the primary motivating force. The Gameplay revolves around the use of a portal gun which can project 2 way portals onto the surfaces of walls. Gravity is conserved when traveling through the portals so the players will must manipulate that to get through the many obstacles. It is a puzzle game in the truest sense of the word. Valve has announced that the Portal experience will be coming to Xbox Live on October 22nd 2008. The new version exclusive to XBL will feature the same original game and 14 new maps exclusive to the Xbox system.

Because the way the videogame industry is set up, companies offer tantalizing demonstrations of their videogames months or even years before its scheduled release. Personally, I have been looking forward to the release of Prizefighter ever since it’s announcement back in January. I had been playing Fight Night Round 3 for over 2 years now and was ready for a new boxing game. Prizefighter as it turned out, was not the answer. While it did have a great story mode, the sluggish controls, recycled characters, extremely weak sound effects and a brutally punishing/cheap AI serve to make Prizefighter one of the first letdowns of 2008. FaceBreaker on the other hand, had a cartoony charm of its own which I couldn’t resist. It’s unique characters coupled with a more wacky take on the boxing genre might have made for a fun party game, had the gameplay been a little better. In many ways, Facebreaker is the opposite of Prizefighter. While Prizefighter encourages slow calculated punches (apparently your boxers cant throw a punch without passing out from exhaustion), FaceBreaker requires furious button mashing . In the end, I traded both games back in and got my Fight Night Round 3 back, you’re better off doing the same.

Disney Interactive announced today that a demo of Pure, Disney’s new action sports game on four wheels, will be made available for the Xbox 360 on the Xbox Live Marketplace. According to Disney, the demo is to set place in Italy, the Mount Garda track. In the demo, gamers will be able to mix speed with tricks as they fight off 15 AI competitors to the finish. In the retail version, gamers will be able to build up their vehicles and play either against 15 AI competitors or 15 other gamers online. The purpose of performing tricks during the race is to boost the gamer’s vehicle. Doing more unbelievable tricks would help boost the player past the finish line. The game is set to release on September 16.
