Because the way the videogame industry is set up, companies offer tantalizing demonstrations of their videogames months or even years before its scheduled release. Personally, I have been looking forward to the release of Prizefighter ever since it’s announcement back in January. I had been playing Fight Night Round 3 for over 2 years now and was ready for a new boxing game. Prizefighter as it turned out, was not the answer. While it did have a great story mode, the sluggish controls, recycled characters, extremely weak sound effects and a brutally punishing/cheap AI serve to make Prizefighter one of the first letdowns of 2008. FaceBreaker on the other hand, had a cartoony charm of its own which I couldn’t resist. It’s unique characters coupled with a more wacky take on the boxing genre might have made for a fun party game, had the gameplay been a little better. In many ways, Facebreaker is the opposite of Prizefighter. While Prizefighter encourages slow calculated punches (apparently your boxers cant throw a punch without passing out from exhaustion), FaceBreaker requires furious button mashing . In the end, I traded both games back in and got my Fight Night Round 3 back, you’re better off doing the same.

Nintendo vs. Sega, Sony vs. Microsoft, Gears of War vs Resistance, the videogame industry is never short on rivalries. Videogame forums are filled with posts of people explaining the differences between the current generation systems and making arguments as to the superior of the two.

Playstation 3 fans tend to cite the high failure rates among the Xbox 360 consoles (especially before the new CPUs were implemented) while 360 owners cite the poor game line-up of the Playstation 3 (which has improved significantly since GTA 4). Of course for reasons related the secure anonymity of the internet, civilized arguments hardly ever remain so for long and eventually devolve into ego battles. After the same game on both consoles, I have come to the conclusion that the graphical differences are miniscule at best. So why is there always such heated debate over the consoles? I guess part of it is because being human beings, we feel the need to validate our decisions. A few hundred dollars is a rather sizeable investment for most of the videogame crowd and no one likes to admit to making the wrong investment. But is there a bad investment? Is the PS3′s 7 core CPU BETTER than the IBM Waternoose? Like it or not, the days of console exclusives are coming to an end. Games developers will develop for all consoles in the future in order to maximize their profits. This means that the differences between consoles will continue to diminish because the bottom line is developers do not have the time or resources to make a certain product better on any single console. The big corporations want the fans to get involved in this battle in hopes of having its own fans devour the competition’s base. But as fans, I say we should let this war continue. As long as there is competition, game developers will continue to make the best product they can at the most competitive prices. Let the fan boy battle continue and don’t either side relent! =)
